“Top Gun 2” on its way

Nearly three decades after playing the iconic role of a dashing fighter pilot with a “need for speed”, Tom Cruise may be back in Top Gun 2.

Talks about sequel have been going on for years, but now the project finally seems to be in the works. During a press event for Terminator Genisys, Skydance CEO and co-producer of the film (as well as a real pilot), David Ellison revealed some details about the film, according to a Collider report.

Ellison revealed that Justin Marks is currently working on the screenplay. “He has a phenomenal take to really update that world for what fighter pilots in the Navy have turned into today,” he added.

Tom Cruise Top GunOn the importance of Cruise’s iconic character, Maverick, to the film, Ellison said, “There is an amazing role for Maverick in the movie and there is no ‘Top Gun‘ without Maverick, and it is going to be Maverick playing Maverick. It is I don’t think what people are going to expect, and we are very, very hopeful that we get to make the movie very soon. But like all things, it all comes down to the script, and Justin is writing as we speak.”

Co-producer Jerry Bruckheimer talked to the Huffington Post about updating the military technology for the sequel and incorporating more advanced aircraft. “The concept is, basically, are the pilots are obsolete because of drones,” Bruckheimer explained, “Cruise is going to show them that they’re not obsolete. They’re here to stay.”

In his Collider interview, Ellison concludes, “So it’s really exploring the end of an era of dogfighting and fighter pilots and what the culture is today are all the fun things that we’re gonna get to dive into this movie.”

Tom Cruise has not yet commented on his role in Top Gun 2 and there is no news if his past co-stars Val Kilmer and Kelly McGillis will be joining him for the sequel.
