A Brand New Adventure: “Harry Potter and the Cursed Child” play to open in London in 2016

J.K. Rowling nearly broke the Internet on Friday when she announced on her Twitter that a Harry Potter play with an original story will be opening in London in 2016.

J. K. RowlingThe beloved author first tweeted to celebrate the 18th anniversary of the publication of the first Harry Potter book in the U.K. She then added, much to the delight of fans everywhere: “I’m also very excited to confirm today that an new play called Harry Potter and the #CursedChild will be opening in London next year. It will tell a new story, which is the result of a collaboration between writer Jack Thorne, director John Tiffany and myself.”

While Rowling did not reveal too many details about the upcoming project, she still provided some intriguing information.

“I don’t want to say too much more, because I don’t want to spoil what I know will be a real treat for fans,” she added. “However, I can say that it is not a prequel!”

She also somewhat clarified the choice of medium for this new story: “To answer one inevitable (and reasonable!) question – why isn’t #CursedChild a new novel? – I am confident that when audiences see the play they will agree that it was the only proper medium for the story.”

“I’ve had countless offers to extend Harry’s story over the years, but Jack, John and Sonia Friedman are a dream team!” Rowling concluded, praising her collaborators. “It has been a huge pleasure to share with them (and soon, with you!) this untold part of Harry’s story.”

Jack Thorne is a Bafta-winning screenwriter whose credits include Skins, Shameless, and The Fades. John Tiffany is an acclaimed theater director known for Black Watch and Once, for which he won a Tony and Drama Desk Award. Sonia Friedman’s theater company Sonia Friedman Productions has been responsible for numerous Tony and Olivier Award-winning productions as well as two TV productions (The Dresser, Wolf Hall) for the BBC.

#CursedChild, the hashtag Rowling used throughout her tweets, rapidly became a trending topic.

According to Rowling’s web site, the play will have its world premiere at the Palace Theatre in London in the summer of 2016 and tickets will go on sale this fall.

The theater’s site provides some more information about the play, particularly that it would “explore the back story leading up to Harry’s parents’ untimely death at the hands of Lord Voldemort.” No casting decisions have been announced so far.

Potter fans all over the world now have another project to look forward to and another chance to revisit the magical world that began capturing hearts 18 years ago.
