The latest entry in the X-Men franchise – Gambit, starring Channing Tatum – has finally found its director. EW exclusively reported today that Rupert Wyatt (Rise of the Planet of the Apes) will helm the 2016 film about everyone’s favorite Cajun mutant.

Will Gambit and Channing Tatum be the heir apparent to Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine when it comes to X-Men stand alone movies?

Gambit, aka Remy LeBeau, has the ability to charge objects with energy, turning them into explosives. He has a way with a deck of cards – either he’s relieving opponents of their money at the gambling table or flinging them into enemy’s direction to explode in their faces.  With a tragic back story and angst – covered by his suave charm and long leather duster – Gambit might be the hero this franchise is looking for.

Tatum is producing Gambit along with Reid Carolin, Lauren Schuler Donner, and Simon Kinberg for 20th Century Fox. It’s scheduled for release on Oct. 7, 2016.
