Jon Bernthal Cast as The Punisher in Season 2 of ‘Marvel’s Daredevil’

Jon Bernthal / Frank Castle

Former The Walking Dead actor Jon Bernthal will be joining the upcoming second season of Marvel’s Daredevil as Frank Castle, a.k.a. The Punisher. Matt Murdock/Daredevil (Charlie Cox) and The Punisher will cross paths in Hell’s Kitchen as The Punisher’s methods of cleaning up the city drastically differ from Matt’s.

A brutal vigilante, hellbent on taking down the criminal element by any means necessary after his family is murdered, The Punisher was first introduced in 1974’s The Amazing Spider-Man #129. Since then the character has thrived in Marvel Comics with several solo series throughout the years. You can currently find The Punisher on store shelves written by Black Widow scribe Nathan Edmondson.

According to Marvel’s Head of Television, Jeph Loeb, “Jon Bernthal brings an unmatched intensity to every role he takes on, with a potent blend of power, motivation and vulnerability that will connect with audiences. Castle’s appearance will bring dramatic changes to the world of Matt Murdock and nothing will be the same.”

Bernthal wouldn’t be the first person to portray this vigilante in a live action setting. The character has been portrayed by the likes of Dolph Lundgren in 1989’s The Punisher, Thomas Jane in in 2004’s The Punisher, and Ray Stevenson in 2008’s Punisher: War Zone. What seems like the easiest character to do justice on screen has repeatedly failed in the film department, except for maybe in the fan favorite short, Dirty Laundry, produced by Adi Shankar (Dredd). With Marvel Studios’ direct involvement in this latest interpretation of the character, I’m confident Jon Bernthal’s Punisher will hit the mark.

Season 2 of Marvel’s Daredevil is set to premiere sometime in 2016 on Netflix.
