Harley Quinn, Deadshot, and More Revealed in Latest ‘Suicide Squad’ Photos

Suicide Squad director David Ayer has released an official image of Task Force X, a.k.a. the Suicide Squad, assembled together, as well as an image of Will Smith in his full Deadshot attire. With the team photo released we finally have a look at what character each actor is playing and what they will look like in the film. Before I get into my thoughts about the costume choices, here’s a breakdown of who’s playing who based on the released image, beginning from left to right.

  • Suicide Squad Team PhotoAdam Beach as Slipknot (rumored)
  • Jai Courtney as Captain Boomerang
  • Cara Delevingne as Enchantress
  • Karen Fukuhara as Katana
  • Joel Kinnaman as Rick Flag
  • Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn
  • Will Smith as Deadshot
  • Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje as Killer Croc
  • Jay Hernandez as El Diablo

What’s probably most surprising in the released team photo is the inclusion of Karen Fukuhara as Katana. Currently, Katana can be seen on The CW’s Arrow played by Rila Fukushima (The Wolverine) and will finally appear in costume on the small screen this Wednesday. There had been little to no mention of Katana appearing in Suicide Squad until now, and when it was announced that Karen Fukuhara would join the cast it was rumored that she would play the character Plastique, an explosives expert who even appeared on The CW’s The Flash.

While DC/Warner Bros. films have often attempted to remain somewhat grounded in reality, the inclusion of both Cara Delevingne’s Enchantress, a magic-based villain, and Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje’s Killer Croc, a villain with reptile-like traits, suggest that Warner Bros. isn’t afraid of embracing more comic booky elements this time around. Also, in the comics, Katana’s sword is known is as the “soultaker” sword for obvious reasons. Hopefully, Suicide Squad won’t be afraid to tackle this supernatural aspect of Katana’s character, being that they decided to use a supernatural character like Enchantress.

Jai Courtney’s Captain Boomerang isn’t that far of a departure from Nick Tarabay’s take on the character in The CW’s Arrow, except here he appears to be a bit more dirty. In fact most of the characters in the released team photo have their fair share of dirt and grime on them, which is expected in a dark and gritty DC film.

Another character who has also appeared plenty of times on Arrow is Deadshot. In the team photo we see an unmasked version of Will Smith’s Deadshot, but thanks to a later tweet from director David Ayer we get to see Smith don the Deadshot mask. Overall his costume looks on point with the Deadshot currently in comics. The only difference is that his eye piece is on the wrong side, but that’s not that big of a deal.

Of course, the one everyone’s been waiting to see is Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn. It makes sense that Warner Bros. would not use Harley Quinn’s classic look as she first appeared in Batman: The Animated Series. Her short shorts, bleached white skin, and pigtails are very reminiscent of her current look in the comics. While I do think her shorts could and should be a bit longer, overall I really like her look. She’s bright and colorful, and while she’s not wielding her usual comically large mallet, she is seen wielding a baseball bat in certain set photos.

With so many characters revealed to be on the team, I’m sure a portion of them will be cannon fodder. If I had to guess, Adam Beach’s Slipknot, Jay Hernandez’s El Diablo, and maybe even Joel Kinnaman’s Rick Flagg might not make it to the end of the film considering their C-list status in DC Comics.

Overall, this biased DC fan is liking what he’s seeing, especially in Deadshot, Killer Croc, Katana, and Harley Quinn, who all have looks close to their comic book counterparts. That being said, this image is very dark and gritty and I could see Warner Bros’ continuous need to make their DC films this way turning some people off. What do you think?
