The Dark Knight III, the sequel to Frank Miller’s 1986 classic The Dark Knight Returns and early 2000s follow-up The Dark Knight Strikes Again, was originally announced in December of 2014. Although, back when it was brought up in December it was stated that Frank Miller would be joined by current Batman writer Scott Snyder. Now as this year’s C2E2 wraps, DC Comics has reaffirmed that Frank Miller will still be writing this third installment in his Dark Knight trilogy, but will instead be joined by writer Brian Azzarello (Wonder Woman, Lex Luthor: Man of Steel).

In response to the Miller and Azzarello working together on this new 8-issue miniseries entitled The Dark Knight III: The Master Race, Co-Publishers Dan Didio and Jim Lee state:

We are thrilled to have Frank back home at DC writing Batman. The story he and Brian have crafted is an astounding and triumphant conclusion to this seminal body of work which influenced and shaped generations of readers and creators alike.

While no artists have been selected for this project, Miller and Azzarello have already spent the past 6 months working on this upcoming mini-series. Miller realizes the challenge he’s up against as he states, “Batman remains my favorite comic book hero and a sequel to Dark Knight is going to be daunting, but we’ll do our best.”

The first issue of The Dark Knight III: The Master Race is slated to release in the Fall of 2015.
