Tom Hardy, who was originally set to play Rick Flag in DC/Warner Bros.’ upcoming Suicide Squad, has dropped out of the film. According to sources, the departure is due to scheduling conflicts with another film Hardy is working on, The Revenent, directed by Alejandro González Iñárritu (Birdman).

According to further reports by The Wrap, Jake Gyllenhaal, who recently starred in the critically acclaimed Nightcrawler, is being eyed as Tom Hardy’s replacement. He is currently being “courted” by Suicide Squad director David Ayer to join the project. If a deal is struck, Suicide Squad would mark the second time Ayer and Gyllenhaal worked together. In 2012 Jake Gyllenhaal starred alongside Michael Peña in the Ayer-written-and-directed End of Watch.

Currently, Suicide Squad is set to star Will Smith, Margot Robbie, Viola Davis, Jai Courtney, Cara Delevinge, and Jared Leto and is set to be released theatrically August 6, 2016. How do you feel about Tom Hardy’s departure? Do you think Jake Gyllenhaal would be a suitable replacement for Suicide Squad leader Rick Flag? Let us know in the comments.
