Gracepoint – Season 1, Episode 10

GRACEPOINT: Detectives Ellie Miller (Anna Gunn, R) and Emmett Carver (David Tennant, L) discuss the murder of Danny Solano in the "Episode Ten" Season Finale of GRACEPOINT airing Thursday, Dec. 11 (9:00-10:00 PM ET/PT) on FOX. ©2014 Fox Broadcasting Co. Cr: Ed Araquel/FOX

The final episode of Gracepoint left viewers less than thrilled when Danny’s murderer was revealed to be not so different than in its Broadchurch counterpart. Within the first ten minutes it appeared that the murderer of Danny Solano had been discovered, as Joe turned on Danny’s phone leading Carver to his house ready to unburden himself. Just like in Broadchurch, Joe had been having a secret relationship with Danny.

It was apparent Carver knew, although he hoped he was wrong. He knows it doesn’t feel right to know something about Ellie’s family that she doesn’t. The only way he can provide solace without letting her in is to tell her she’s done a good job on the case, when they meet up at the beach and share one of his close secrets – that he’s been to Gracepoint before. He is so understanding and patient with Miller as if they are now in a secret club, both of their spouses having betrayed them. The range of emotion that David Tennant can expose with the few words Carver says and the pain in his face as he delivers his lines is heartbreaking.

Everything about these scenes echo that of Broadchurch. From the way Joe’s argument went with Danny to Carver telling Ellie that her husband was the one. Miller even pukes, like her British counterpart did, collapsing to the floor and wishing to see him. Of course Carver allows her, and Ellie is on Joe like a mama bear protecting her young. Anna Gunn delivers a more angered representation than Olivia Coleman’s broken Miller, screaming and kicking at him no holds barred until she has to be removed by a fellow officer.

That was until everything changed, with one glance at a dirty pair of sneakers. As Ellie checked her smaller family into a hotel for protection, Tom hides in the bathroom wanting to know what is going on. Ellie breaks the news to her so that his dad was the one to kill his best friend. She adamantly promises that she will always be there for her son, no matter what, that she will protect him forever. And then she sees it: his sneakers, dirty and worn, size six just like the footprints found at the hut, and Gracepoint revives itself from what appeared to be a doomed ending.

In that moment it’s a whole new show. It breaks from the barrier and everything that was Broadchurch as Tom breaks down, telling Ellie the truth. How he followed Joe to the hut, how he tried to help Danny, how it was an accident when the board he was waving to fend his father off hit Danny in the head. But even then, it’s only one change, until Ellie goes to see Joe. When he begs her, asking her what to do. The cascading anger that flows from her at the man she once loved, ordering him to take the fall for their child, ensuring his chance at a life is worth everything – it erases any doubt that was raised when Anna Gunn was cast.

Suddenly everything makes sense once seen in a different light. Why Tom was so odd around his father, why Joe flipped out over Tom receiving Danny’s skateboard, and the true reason Tom went after Piers, to plant evidence at his house without his father’s knowledge. Joe’s behavior even eases up, showing the love for his son was the final factor involved in hiding Danny’s body. Although his worry over where his son was when he disappeared changes from the parental fear to fear that Tom would tell someone the truth of what happened.

Oh how quickly things change, as Miller is now the one in the know with Carver oblivious on the side lines. He wanders around, deciding on heart surgery, calling his daughter, attending Danny’s funeral, and meeting privately with Miller. He needs a second chance, having nothing to keep him going anymore. Nothing, now that the case is solved. Making plans, Carver promises to be there for Julianne’s graduation and recruits her to take care of him after his surgery. It’s plain for anyone to see that he’s sorry things turned out the way they did. Just as he told Miller, even allowing her to call him Emmett without correction. But then, something catches his eye, and for some reason Carver plays the video of Tom’s interview again, catching a look, catching a word, that something that isn’t quite right. In that instant he knows. And it’s just too bad there is no second season renewed yet, because only God can prevent Carver from bringing Danny’s true murder to justice.
