Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., S2 Ep10 – What They Become

Not only was “What They Become” an amazing mid-season finale, but it was also a very important episode that adds a whopper of a puzzle piece to Marvel’s ever-expanding cinematic universe. Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. has been leading up to this big reveal since Bill Paxton’s John Garrett began drawing weird symbols in season one. After this week’s revelation, Marvel Comics readers should have an idea of where the series is headed. For those of you who don’t, I won’t spoil it for you until the end of this review.

Reunited and it feels so bad

Reunited and it feels so bad

In last week’s episode Ward retrieved Skye in order to bring her to her father, who we now know goes by the name of Cal. This so called reunion was a major factor in this week’s episode as it both progressed Skye’s character and aided in ending Cal’s alliance with Daniel Whitehall. As discovered in recent episodes, Cal only allied himself with Whitehall so he may reunite with his daughter and eventually take his revenge on Whitehall for murdering his love.

During their conversation, Cal lays on the clues pretty thick as to what Skye is and what her mother actually was. Terms like “special” and “transformation” are not to be taken lightly. Overall, their conversation was tense and Kyle MacLachlan continues to deliver a strong performance as Skye’s crazy long lost father, turning the creep factor up to 11. Despite his creepiness, one can still somewhat sympathize with the character as everything he has done has been to get his daughter back and take his revenge. He’s still nuts, though.

I watched this episode wanting Cal to complete his mission of taking out Whitehall and bringing Skye into the temple to fulfill her destiny. For one, Whitehall is evil and needs to be stopped. Secondly, we need to find out what Skye is already. Why is she an 0-8-4? Why hasn’t the GH.325 affected her like it has Coulson? Almost humorously, Cal is robbed of his revenge by Coulson, who kills Whitehall during S.H.I.E.L.D.’s raid on HYDRA’s base. What follows is an attempted beat-down by Cal on Coulson, until Skye rushes in threatening to kill her own father. How she got to that point is something I quite enjoyed, seeing her shoot Ward multiple times without hesitation.

Skye does give her father a chance to escape, still threatening to kill him on his way out. Feeling disappointed in herself for being unable to pull the trigger, she attempts to redeem herself by stopping Raina from bringing the Obilesk to the temple fulfilling her apparently sinister plan.

Before we get into what happened next, there were some other interesting moments thrown about in “What They Become.” If you read my review from last week it may have seemed that I wasn’t too keen on Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. killing off Mac. Mac has grown into one of my favorite ancillary characters on the series this season. Fortunately, “What They Become” gives us hope that Mac is still alive. Fitz and Simmons even come to the conclusion that he was infected by the temple in order to do the temple’s bidding. I was happy to see that Mac was still alive, although still under control by the temple. After the episode’s final moments it seems Mac broke free of the hold the temple had on him and he may make it into the second half of this season unscathed.
