We all figured this was the case already as it’s been rumored for months, but Marvel has now officially confirmed that Benedict Cumberbatch will play the titular role in Doctor Strange. Producer Kevin Feige had this to say on the latest casting decision:
Stephen Strange’s story requires an actor capable of great depth and sincerity. In 2016, Benedict will show audiences what makes Doctor Strange such a unique and compelling character.
Of course we all know Cumberbatch from his groundbreaking work on Sherlock. He has most recently played the villain Khan in Star Trek Into Darkness and voiced the dragon Smaug in The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug. Currently Cumberbatch can be seen playing historical figure Alan Turing in The Imitation Game, now in theaters.
Considering his résumé, Cumberbatch is indeed a solid choice for the role of Stephen Strange and I’m sure he won’t let us down. Although, I would’ve preferred a casting choice less on-the-nose. What do you think? Feel free to let us know in the comments.
Doctor Strange, directed by Scott Derrickson (Sinister), is scheduled to release in theaters November 4, 2016.
