Gracepoint – Season 1, Episode 7

This week’s episode of Gracepoint flashed viewers into a whole new show. With the disappearance of Tom Miller and arrival of Julianne Carver, it was obvious this wasn’t simply a Broadchurch remake anymore. Gone were the animosities of the previous weeks as the town pulled together, yes even Mark Solano and Paul Coates, to find Ellie and Joe’s boy.

After the previous week’s ending and preview for this episode, you knew there was going to be no happy ending with the seventh episode of Gracepoint. Tom took priority in this episode, yet he was barely seen on screen. With his awkward touch from Paul Coates at Jack Marshall’s funeral to Carver trying not to die next to him as he questioned Tom about Danny and the priest, Tom was in the forefront right away. Viewers knew they were in for a ride when Tom, who was acting extra cold towards his father, went to ride the remaining three blocks to his school on his own. What does an eleven year old have to hide in his backpack? Seemed a little sketchy that he overreacted when Joe offered to carry his sack for him.

Unfortunately, not much information is gained as to Tom’s whereabouts as Mark puts his grief to work, heading up the search for Tom. In fact, the mystery of where Tom is brings the Solano family together, as Beth and Chloe and her Mum work on sandwiches for volunteers. It even creates a new foundation for Paul and Mark, who start to praise each other rather than sulk and glare with hatred. Thankfully, this new found tolerance doesn’t get in the way of Mark noticing how Reverend Paul seems to navigate them right over to where Tom’s bike is found.

Even Carver seems to show a softer side, revealing that despite his gruff exterior he may actually care what others, or at least what Ellie, thinks of him. He even goes that extra mile of throwing a temper tantrum in front of the Chief, trying to get extra resources to find Tom. Too bad Carver couldn’t show his own daughter that he cared, once again putting his work before her. Julie, excuse me, Julianne, arrives just in time to call her dad on the pathetic message he left her. Yet, for someone who wanted to talk to her so desperately, Carver runs the other way.  Granted, there was another kid missing so maybe he deserves a break.

Luckily, Julianne is like every teenager and while bored in her dad’s office begins to snoop around, finding Carver’s Adenosine. With a quick search of Google and conformation from Julianne confronting Carver, it is revealed that just like Broadchurch’s Alec Hardy, Emmett Carver also has a heart condition. We’ll just ignore the creative license used since Adenosine isn’t administered through intramuscular injection but rather intravenously. Of course, Carver choses the “lunatic” over his daughter just as she suspected he would, and by the time he comes looking for her she’s already gone. But at least his secret will be safe.

Speaking of lunatics, viewers finally got a good look at who the mysterious backpacker, Lars Pierson, is. He certainly knows how to rile them up, focusing on his missing french fries and trying to offer Carver and Ellie some of his Risperdal. You know, for Carver’s stress and Ellie’s trauma. It was nice to see Ellie break and need to be the one restrained by Carver rather than running around apologizing for him, as she threatened to punish Pierson if he hurt her Tom. If only she knew what Vince was up to, running around with blood on his face and threatening Susan after trying to buy her off.

Next week’s episode of Gracepoint can only get worse before it gets better, from the looks of the preview. Carver gets extremely angry with Pierson refusing to give up information. With only three episodes left, the investigation has to start turning up leads soon. Clues that point in the good Reverend’s and creepy chicken killer Susan’s directions. As the investigation continues, the Solano family has to try to figure out what life looks like without Danny. Tune in Thursday, November 20 at 9pm EST/PST to see what’s in store for the small town of Gracepoint next, and remember to let us know who you think killed Danny and where you think Tom is in the comments below.
