Fantastic Four: Doctor Doom Is A Blogger?

Fantastic Four is being rebooted, whether you like it or not, and 20th Century Fox is trusting that people will like it this time around. But in trying to avoid the same pitfalls the previous films made, I think they may have gone a bit too far in the other direction.

Toby Kebbell

Director Josh Trank, best known for his found footage science fiction movie Chronicle, has promised a more “realistic,” “lo-fi” version of the comic book super team. This sounds a bit at odds with the “Fantastic” in the film’s title, but maybe he can pull it off. However, the most recent news about the movie is sure to cause some chaos among fans. Actor Toby Kebbell told Collider that his character, the Fantastic Four’s arch-nemesis Doctor Doom, will have a “radically” different back story:

He’s Victor Domashev, not Victor Von Doom in our story.  And I’m sure I’ll be sent to jail for telling you that.  The Doom in ours—I’m a programmer.  Very anti-social programmer.  And on blogging sites I’m “Doom.”

Doom, the dreaded computer programmer. Not Doctor Doom, the ruler of Latveria, Doom the powerful inventor and sorcerer. No, it’s Doom, the anti-social tech geek who hangs out on blogging sites. If that’s all it takes to be a supervillain these days, then where is my superhero archenemy? Maybe Trank will be able to pull off this vastly differently version of the story, and maybe the film will be better for it, but this news will no doubt disappoint quite a few fans out there.

Fantastic Four opens in theaters on August 6, 2015 in the UK and on August 7 in the US. What do you think about this change to Doom’s character? Sound off in the comments!
