Gracepoint – Season 1, Episode 6

GRACEPOINT: Detectives Emmett Carver (David Tennant, R) and Ellie Miller (Anna Gunn, L) retrace Danny's steps on the night of his murder in "Episode Six" of GRACEPOINT airing Thursday, Nov. 6 (9:00-10:00 PM ET/PT) on FOX. ©2014 Fox Broadcasting Co. Cr: Ed Araquel/FOX

Sexual tension and curious behavior seemed to be the theme of this week’s episode as everyone was flirting with one another, yet no one got lucky. Whatever is going on in the small town of Gracepoint, it sure seems they all get bored and want to sleep around. This especially comes to light between CSI Hugo and Miller’s conversation in the break room. Despite knowing she’s happily married, he still wants to get a drink alone. Although this seems trivial, thank God for it because it leads to one of the funniest scenes of the episode when Ellie begs Carver to talk to Hugo rather than having her do it. Carver’s response makes the night providing imagery that poor Ellie never dreamed of having.

That conversation certainly stayed with Carver as we clearly know what was on his mind after discussing all of the attention to detail that the crime scene investigator’s hands are used to. It must have boosted his sexual prowess enough to make a pass at Gemma later in the hotel room. Even if the poor guy did get denied, with all the talk of her happy pills the last week it’s at least less worrying to know the only reason she said no was because she’s worried about his ability to stay conscious.

Mark’s winning attitude surely continued this episode. If viewers didn’t think Mark was an ass already, he certainly took the cake this week when he ultimately blames Beth for his cheating. Come on man! You cheated on her the night your son died and now want to blame her for the affair? No wonder she keeps running to Paul Coates instead of wanting you. He then switches from blaming her into begging her not to leave leading to Beth finally telling him she’s pregnant. What’s surprising is that later Chloe, who was listening in, approaches Mark asking if she should talk to Beth about keeping the baby. This spin truly shows real family dynamics. The idea of having lost a brother is still raking through the family but yet the prospect of a new child in the midst of the tragedy could be their spark of hope.

This week Nick Nolte demonstrated his superb acting skills. Jack was a gem in this episode. Not only did he have the whole town running after him, ready to ship him out but the Carver refused to do anything to help despite his personal pleas. You could feel the hurt and pain throughout every scene. All the man wanted was for someone to step up for him. Thankfully, just when it looked like the town lunch mob was about to close in Mark came to his rescue. Assuring Mark that he never touched Danny, Jack explains that the two of them aren’t so different. Seeing how Jack was railroaded into a conviction explains why he’s so distrustful of the police. After his son died and his wife and he failed to cope all Jack wanted was to start over. His personal story shows all the work that lies ahead for the Solano family if they chose to fight for their family’s survival.

It’s just too bad we don’t get to see more of this dimension since Jack offed himself in the ocean at the end of the episode. With Vince’s consistent hounding of the town Jack felt backed into a corner. He had no where else to go. The reason why Vince got involved sure seems suspicious. He isn’t a father and has nothing to be fearful of yet pushes the town into starting a lynch mob and leads the assault himself. What is Vince hiding so desperately that he needs Gracepoint to focus on Jack?

Next week’s episode gears up to be one for the books as Gracepoint completely departs from the Broadchurch story line as Miller’s son, Tom, turns up missing. New suspects will come to the forefront as Jack’s funeral takes place and Vince runs around Gracepoint trying to keep his own secrets in the bag.
