Hugh Bonneville Dismisses Isis Controversy

Robert Crawley

downtonS05E07thomasHugh Bonneville, who portrays the ever-out-of-step Robert Crawley on Downton Abbey, has posted a message on his official website dismissing claims that Isis, the Crawleys’ beloved Golden Labrador, is being killed off due to unpleasant associations with ISIS, the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria, the jihadist group based in the Middle East.  In episode six of series five, now airing on ITV, Isis was seemingly taken ill.  In episode seven, it is revealed that the hound who Lord Grantham has loved perhaps more than his own daughters, is dying of cancer.  News outlets speculated that this was due to the awkwardness of any character on a show being named Isis given the sociopolitical climate.

According to a spokesman for ITV, speaking to The Independent, the series five episodes would already have been written by the time ISIS became a hot topic.

On his website, Bonneville states: “Anyone who genuinely believes the Series 5 storyline (1924) involving the animal was a reaction to recent world news is a complete berk.”

Thus deftly dismissing much of the internet, Lord Grantham returned home to look after his precious new kitten, Al-Qaeda.
