Gambit will finally be getting his time to shine. 20th Century Fox has officially greenlit the long-rumored spinoff film featuring one of the most popular X-Men comic book characters. Supposedly it will be based on a treatment by Chris Claremont, a veteran X-Men writer, and Josh Zetumer will be writing the screenplay.
Gambit has only appeared in the X-Men films once, in the horribly panned X-Men Origins: Wolverine, where he was played by Taylor Kitsch. He was only on screen for maybe ten minutes, but fans at least agreed that he looked like someone who could play Gambit. The same can’t be said for the current actor who has been cast in the role. Channing Tatum will play the Ragin’ Cajun as well as help produce the film. Tatum has promised a “fresh take” on the character, and supposedly he will appear in X-Men: Apocalypse too, which will introduce the character before he branches out into a solo film. When the news initially broke that Tatum would play Gambit, fans everywhere groaned in mutual disappointment and disapproval, expounding upon various reasons for their dislike ranging from his acting abilities to the fact that he just doesn’t look anything like the character. I don’t think 20th Century Fox realizes that they seem to be the only ones excited about their casting choice, and poor Tatum will be facing an uphill battle in trying to get fans on board with his version of the beloved character.
X-Men: Apocalypse will open on May 16, 2016. The untitled Gambit spinoff currently has no release date. Knowing that Tatum will be taking on the fan favorite Gambit, are you still interested in watching? Or do you think Fox should rethink their decision? Let us know in the comments!
