Captain America 3: RDJ Joining Cast and the Civil War?

Captain America 3 has become one of the most anticipated sequels of the Marvel Cinematic Universe thanks to the popularity of Captain America: The Winter Soldier. But how could Marvel possibly top Cap 2? Apparently, by adding Iron Man.

According to Variety, Robert Downey Jr. is in negotiations with Marvel to appear in the next Captain America movie. Reportedly his character will play a role in starting the famous Civil War storyline from the comic books.

avengers-age-of-ultron-iron-man-posterMarvel has yet to comment on this report, but the news makes sense. It has been said that Captain America 3 would introduce something hugely important into the MCU, and supposedly the title has been planned for years, so the introduction of the popular Civil War plot would fit with that. And since the center of that story is Tony Stark and Steve Rogers taking different sides when it comes to the Superhero Registration Act (Tony for, Steve against), Iron Man would have to be brought into Cap’s movie if its the one destined to kick off Marvel’s next big storyline that will shape the course of the franchise for years to come. On top of that, RDJ has been going back and forth on whether or not another Iron Man movie will be made, but he definitely sounds like he wants to stick around in the MCU for a while. Interestingly, this news comes right after Marvel announced a revival of the Civil War comics, perhaps as a way to prepare new fans for what’s coming next.

But let’s unpack what this means for Captain America 3. If you’re a Tony fan, you’ll probably be happy to see him in the movie, even if he’ll no doubt be taking on a more antagonistic role. If you’re not, however, then you might be annoyed that he’s once again going to be the center of attention, co-opting Cap’s movie right out from under him. Now I love Tony, don’t get me wrong, but Captain America: The Winter Soldier proved that Cap was awesome too. In fact, it’s my favorite Marvel movie at the moment, and I was hoping to see more of what made Steve suddenly so cool in the next one. I was hoping for Cap and Falcon searching for Bucky and an emotional continuation of the Winter Soldier story that really delved into Steve and Bucky’s relationship. Adding Iron Man and the Civil War plotline, while a good idea for Marvel to set up more movies, would take away from Cap’s own story, and I’m afraid it just won’t live up to Winter Soldier. Winter Soldier was many things – a political thriller, a fun action/adventure – but what has made the biggest impact among fans is the heart, the emotion, of the film. I know Marvel can pull off anything it wants, and if I had heard about this back before watching Winter Soldier I would have been excited, but now I’m not so sure.

Of course, this is just potential casting news, and we have no idea where Marvel will be taking this. They’ve proven they can make almost anything work so far. But can they live up to everyone’s expectations? Winter Soldier made me a Steve fan, so which side will I be on come May 6, 2016, when Captain America 3 is released? Which side will you be on? Sound off in the comments!
