Greg Berlanti’s ‘Supergirl’ Series Heads to CBS

Supergirl by Michael Turner

Supergirl by Amy ReederLast week the news broke out that Arrow/The Flash producer Greg Berlanti, along with producer Ali Adler (Glee, Chuck), were working on a series based of the DC Comics character Supergirl. Now it has been confirmed that CBS has picked up Berlanti and Adler’s Supergirl, and it will go straight to series.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the basic premise for Supergirl is as follows:

The hourlong drama . . . centers on Kara Zor-El, Superman’s cousin, who was born on the planet Krypton and escaped amid its destruction years ago. Since arriving on Earth, she has been hiding the powers she shares with her famous cousin. But now at age 24, she decides to embrace her superhuman abilities and be the hero she was always meant to be.

Supergirl is now a part of a long list of DC Comics TV series currently in development, including Lucifer, Titans, Preacher, and DMZ, just to name a few. Existing DC series returning/premiering this Fall include Arrow, The Flash, Constantine, iZombie, and Gotham.

As of right now there hasn’t been any confirmation on whether or not Supergirl will exist in the same universe as Man of Steel and Batman v. Superman. The chances of that happening are slim, as DC Comics CCO Geoff Johns has stated in the past that DC’s TV universe is intended to remain separate from their cinematic universe. Either way I’m glad that WB/DC is giving a female-led title a shot on the small screen as the majority of their shows are male-led. Hopefully, Berlanti and Adler will be able to spin the same magic they have on their previous works and Supergirl becomes a hit.

What do you think about Supergirl heading to CBS? Are you looking forward to it? Skeptical? Feel free to let us know in the comments.
