Matt Nable / Ra’s al Ghul

Earlier this year at Comic-Con International, Warner Bros. revealed the DC villain known as Ra’s al Ghul would be introduced in the upcoming third season of Arrow. A trailer was also released teasing the character’s appearance, but at that time an actor was not yet chosen for the role. Now it has been announced that Matt Nable will play the role of Ra’s al Ghul. A role recently played by Liam Neeson in Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight Trilogy.

Matt Nable, a Rugby player turned actor, has appeared in numerous movies and television series since 2007. He recently appeared alongside Vin Diesel (Fast & Furious) and Katee Sackhoff (Battlestar Galactica) last year in Riddick.

Ra’s al Ghul is a character that has been mentioned several times during Arrow‘s second season. His daughter, Nyssa al Ghul, even made an appearance in a number of episodes including the season finale. Ra’s is said to have a grudge against Malcolm Merlyn, Arrow‘s season one villain played by Malcolm Merlyn who has since been upgraded to series regular. So, it’s safe to assume those two may have to face off at least once during season three. Executive producer Marc Guggenheim states Ra’s al Ghul will stay “true to the comic-book origins” and will be “different” than the previous incarnation seen in The Dark Knight Trilogy.

In addition to this latest casting update, The CW has also released a 90-second trailer for the upcoming season. The trailer focuses on the lighter side of the series as sparks fly between Oliver Queen/Arrow (Stephen Amell) and Felicity Smoak (Emily Bett Rickards). We are also treated to longer glimpse of former Superman actor Brandon Routh as Ray Palmer. Check it out below and feel free to let us know your thoughts in the comments.

Arrow‘s third season premieres Wednesday, October 8 at 8/7c on The CW.
