The Veronica Mars Gang Returns for Spin-Off Webseries

ryan_hansenBack in January, creator Rob Thomas spoke about a possible spin off project revolving around one of the Veronica Mars characters, Dick Casablancas – played by Ryan Hansen. It has now been confirmed that it is a webseries titled Play It Again, Dick and that all eight episodes have already completed filming. Thomas describes the webseries to be more tonally in common with one of his other television projects, Party Down, which also starred Hansen.

The best surprise about the webseries is that most of the major Veronica Mars alum will be returning to reprise their roles in a meta sort of way. The premise of the series revolves around a Veronica Mars spin-off that Hansen has written so most characters will be reprising their Veronica Mars roll on top of playing a slightly fictionalized version of themselves.

Kristen Bell (Veronica Mars), Jason Dohring (Logan Echolls), Enrico Colantoni (Keith Mars), Percy Daggs III (Wallace Fennell), Daran Norris (Cliff McCormack), Francis Capra (Eli “Weevil” Navarro), and Christopher B. Duncan (Clarence Wiedman) will all be playing two rolls as a skewed version of themselves and reprising their Veronica Mars characters.

Sadly Chris Lowell will only be playing himself Chris Lowell so that means no return of Piz. As is the case with Ken Marino so there won’t be return for Vinny Van Lowe. Amanda Noret will reprise her on screen role as Madison Sinclair, as will Lisa Thornhill as Celeste Kane.

A surprise return is Kyle Gallner who will be playing himself and reprising his roll as Cassidy “Beaver” Casablancas. We last saw Beaver in the Veronica Mars season 2 finale where he leaped off a rooftop and killed himself so it will be interesting in how Hansen manages to bring his character’s brother back into the storyline.

Another surprise is Ryan Devlin, who will be playing both Duncan Kane and himself. This is a bit of a shock since in the original television show, Duncan was played by Teddy Dunn and Devlin played rapist Mercer Hayes in the third season of the show.

The stars of Thomas’ iZombie series, Robert Buckley and Rose McIver, will also have guest roles in the series. Buckley plays Gaston, a flamboyent choreographer who ends up replacing Dohring as Logan and McIver will be playing the roles of “Skank with Attitude” and “Horny Mourner.”

Other guests featured are Wesley Chang, Philip Wang and Chris Dinh from WongFu Productions, Mark Pedowitz, the president of the CW, and Thom Sherman, the CW‘s head of devlopment.

Though this seems a bit muddled and confusing, we’re really excited to see how it all comes together! What do you think about getting another chance to see another project reunion for the Veronica Mars stars?
