Recently at Comic-Con International, Arrow executive producer Marc Guggenheim revealed that the DC character known as Wildcat would be in the show’s upcoming third season. Now it’s been announced that J.R. Ramirez has been cast in the role. Ramirez has recently held a role on the STARZ original series, Power, and his other TV credits include Emily Owens M.D. and House of Payne.

The character Ted Grant, a.k.a. Wildcat, was created by Irwin Hasen and Bill Finger (who co-created Batman). Wildcat first appeared in Sensation Comics #1 in 1942 as a heavyweight boxer and wrongfully accused fugitive turned superhero, who actually has nine lives. He is known to have been a mentor to both Batman and Black Canary. The character has since been neglected in DC’s current New 52 continuity, but has been featured in the comics for several decades before that. Since his incarnation, Ted Grant has also been seen in several DC television projects including Justice League Unlimited, Batman: The Brave and the Bold, Young Justice, and even Smallville, played by actor Roger Hasket.

According to Deadline, the Arrow version of Ted Grant “will be a former boxer who now runs a gym for underprivileged youth” in Starling City. He will play a major role in Laurel Lance’s arc, possibly training her to be the hero she was always meant to be. Black Canary.

Arrow‘s third season premieres Wednesday, October 8, 2014 at 8PM ET/PT on The CW.
