Fantastic Four Reboot Not Based on Comics?

There’s not much we can say for certainty about the upcoming Fantastic Four reboot. Even the reveal of the main cast members was never done officially, it was just gradually revealed through sources and by the actors themselves. Also, it was originally stated that the series was going be in a shared universe with the X-Men films, but then later one of the producers took that back. Most of what we know is rumor and speculation, based on unofficial sources, so it can be hard to figure just what’s truth and what’s not with this movie.

But actress Kate Mara, who will play Sue Storm, has said that the plot of the film will not be based on anything we’ve seen before in the comics:

I’ve never been a fan of comics, I’ve never actually read one. I was going to for this movie but the director said it wasn’t necessary. Well, actually he told us that we shouldn’t do it because the plot won’t be based on any history of anything already published. So I chose to follow his instructions.

So the plot won’t be based on “any history of anything already published.” What exactly does that mean? It sounds like she’s saying the plot won’t be based on the comics, but that’s a bit unlikely, especially considering how popular comic book-based movies are at the moment. Before, it had seemed safe to assume that the story would be at least loosely based on something from the comics, even if it’s just another origin film showing how the Four got their powers. But now it sounds like the writers are going for something completely different, possibly to distance this movie from the original films. However, this is all just speculation until we get an official plot synopsis.

Fantastic Four will be released in the UK on June 18, 2015 and in the US on June 19. What do you think about the movie not being based on the comics? What do you think Mara means by that? Let us know in the comments!
