In recent weeks DC Comics has announced a slew of upcoming change-ups to their line of comic books. From new titles like Gotham AcademyDeathstroke, and Lobo to new creative teams on Wonder Woman, Green Arrow, and Catwoman, a lot of these change-ups are expected to hit this October.

Also shifting gears this October is Batgirl. Currently written by Gail Simone (Red Sonja, Tomb Raider) and featuring art by Fernando Pasarin (Green Lantern Corps), Batgirl will be taken over by a new creative team in October. Writers Brenden Fletcher (Wednesday Comics) and Cameron Stewart (Batman, Inc) and artist Babs Tarr (Assassin’s Creed: Brahman) will take over the book with issue #35.

Stewart and Tarr have even given Barbara Gordon/Batgirl a brand new look by tossing away her skintight spandex and giving her a leather jacket, snap on gloves and cape, and different boots (right). Overall, her new costume design is practical and looks like something you’d see a superhero wear in real life. I like.

In an interview with MTV News, the new team discussed a few upcoming changes to the character. After being faced with so much tragedy in recent years, including a fire that burns up everything she owns, Barbara Gordon/Batgirl decides to start having fun and living life as a “young, single girl in the city” and moves to a trendy area in Gotham City called Burnside. She will begin to focus more on her grad school studies while of course continuing to fight crime. Fletcher mentions their run on Batgirl will mix “the best elements of Veronica Mars and Girls, with a dash of Sherlock thrown in for good measure.”

Batgirl #35 hits store shelves October 8, 2014.
