Deathstroke by Tony S. Daniel

Back in 2011 when DC relaunched their entire line of comics with The New 52, one series that was relaunched was Deathstroke. Sadly, Deathstroke was eventually canceled in early 2013. While the character has maintained a presence in other titles since then and will even play a key role in DC’s upcoming title All-New Suicide Squad, fans of the character have been without a solo series for quite some time. Now, with what might be due to the popularity of Slade Wilson/Deathstroke on The CW’s Arrow, DC has decided to give the one-eyed mercenary another chance.

This October, DC will begin publishing a brand new ongoing Deathstroke title. It will be written and drawn by Tony S. Daniel, who has worked on a ton of DC titles in the past several years, including Batman, Detective Comics, Savage Hawkman, and most recently Superman/Wonder Woman. Artist Sandu Florea, who has worked in the industry for decades and has recently inked titles such as Detective Comics and Justice League, will join Daniel on the series as co-artist.

In a recent interview with MTV, Tony S. Daniel opened up about the upcoming project. Daniel states that while his Deathstroke will still be interpreted as a “bad guy” he wants to write the character in a way that readers become invested emotionally in the character’s “missions and stories”. Daniel also states that after seeing what The CW has done with Deathstroke on Arrow, he intends to have Deathstroke and Green Arrow cross paths eventually. In a recent tweet, Daniel also broke the news that he will no longer be drawing for Superman/Wonder Woman.

Launching a new Deathstroke title is definitely a smart move on DC’s part. Not only has the character increased in popularity due to his appearance on Arrow, but also due to his appearances in recent video games. Deathstroke plays a key role and is available as a playable character in both Injustice: Gods Among Us and Batman: Arkham Origins, which are both currently available on Xbox 360, Playstation 3, Wii U, and PC.

Deathstroke hits store shelves October 22, 2014.
