Devon Aoki Cast as Katana in ‘Arrow’

Devon Aoki, who’s no stranger to comic book adaptations having played Miho in Sin City, will soon join the cast of The CW’s Arrow. She will play Tatsu Yamashiro, also known as Katana. Aoki will play the sword-wielding, martial arts expert in the upcoming third season of the series. Her character is said to appear as one of Oliver Queen’s mentors in next season’s flashback scenes which, based on the last season’s finale, will most likely take place in Hong Kong.

Tatsu Yamashiro/Katana first appeared in The Brave and the Bold #200 in 1983. Since then she has played a key role in Green Arrow comics, as well as Birds of Prey and even Justice League of America most recently. Season three of Arrow will mark the first time Katana has appeared in a live-action series. Before this she has only appeared on screen in animated form in Batman: The Brave and the Bold, and more recently the failed Cartoon Network series Beware the Batman. She has been known to wield what is called the Soultaker sword, which extracts the souls of all who are killed by it. Whether the Soultaker sword will be used in Arrow is uncertain.

Devon Aoki is American born and raised, and is of Japanese descent. Having only seen Aoki in Sin City, where she played a mute assassin, I can’t really comment much on her acting, but she does know how to do action and how to wield a sword. In addition to Sin City she has also appeared in 2 Fast 2 Furious, Dead or Alive, and War alongside the great Jet Li and Jason Statham.
