Has Marvel Found a Director for Doctor Strange?

Reports are saying that Marvel has hired director Scott Derrickson to helm an upcoming Doctor Strange movie. I had hoped to wait for Marvel to confirm this news, especially considering there have been so many rumors floating around about Doctor Strange for a while and yet all we’ve been told officially is that it’s “in development,” but it looks likely that the reports are true. (Besides, Marvel is probably a bit busy freaking out over yet another director turning down Ant-Man).

Derrickson confirmed the news himself via twitter after both Variety and THR broke the story:

Here’s the picture he included, which obviously doesn’t give any sort of hint as to what he’s talking about whatsoever:

So the odds are good that Marvel has indeed found a director for at least one of their upcoming Phase Three films (assuming Doctor Strange is even going to be in Phase Three).  Currently, there is no release date. We’re not sure what the plot will be either, but here’s what we do know: In the comic books, Doctor Stephen Strange is a former neurosurgeon who gains magical powers. In the Marvel Cinematic Universe, according to Captain America: The Winter Soldier, S.H.I.E.L.D. is already aware of Doctor Strange’s existence, thanks to an incredibly brief reference. Also, Derrickson is known for films such as Sinister and The Exorcism of Emily Rose, so Marvel may be looking to take Doctor Strange in a darker direction than their previous films.

What do you think about Marvel’s choice? What do you hope to see in the film (personally, if they don’t use the song “Strange Magic” at some point in time, I will be disappointed)? Let us know in the comments below!
