I bring you some sad news today: Edgar Wright will no longer be directing Ant-Man. According to a joint statement released by Marvel and Wright, he will be stepping down from the director’s chair, despite having worked on the movie since 2006. The statement said:
Marvel and Edgar Wright jointly announced today that the studio and director have parted ways on Ant-Man due to differences in their vision of the film. The decision to move on is amicable and does not impact the release date on July 17, 2015. A new director will be announced shortly.
For many fans, including myself, this will no doubt come as disappointing news, but at least the film is still moving forward. What do you think about Wright stepping down? Who do you think they should find to replace him? Sound off in the comments!
I’m so very disappointed in this news. And very worried. It’s hard not to assume that this is Disney wanting a more commercial film and them having come to head over the terms. Especially as rumors are Feige himself actually supports Wright in this, and then you have Joss’ picture tweeted this morning holding the Cornetto Cone (which Wright retweeted, but he hasn’t made any other statement).
It’s worrying. Very very worrying.
It’s very worrying. I had faith that Wright would make a good film, and I don’t know who could possibly replace him. My first thought was Disney getting in the way, too, and it’s a shame they chose now, after years of Wright working on the film, to tell him to change his plan. Ant-Man is one of their biggest risks, so I can understand if they want to be cautious, but I thought that’s why they’d hired Wright in the first place, because he could take something crazy and make it work. Though I guess with Marvel’s continued luck with blockbusters so far, and Phase Two doing so incredibly well, Disney could be worried that Ant-Man will be the film to ruin it, and that’s why they suddenly decided to buckle down. I don’t know, I’m just freaking out about what’s going to happen next. They trusted Joss, they trusted James Gunn, why couldn’t they trust Wright?
Yeah. The spec is that Disney is dead set on all Marvel films making at least $700 worldwide, and they just didn’t have faith that Wright could do that. Which, ok…but I also don’t think Ant-Man is likely to do that even if Joss could helm the film. Even Guardians of the Galaxy, which doesn’t seem to be the risk it once was, is unlikely to be on that level.
Did you see James Gunn’s post about the situation? It seems telling for sure. Also, the fact that Drew Goddard may be stepping down from Daredevil, but still has an EP credit. But it looks like Wright is out entirely (except they likely have to use his script). That’s worrying for sure.
Yeah, I saw Gunn’s FB post. He seemed like he was trying to be very diplomatic about the whole thing, like he didn’t want to pick a side (at least not in public). But he definitely fell on the side of them not being a good fit together, which suggests that Wright isn’t who Disney wants to helm a film. But I agree with you, Ant-Man is probably not going to reach $700 mil, it’s too new and too unknown to get that on the first outing. They should have realized that when they okayed the idea, and maybe they did, but with all the overwhelming success after The Avengers I guess they’re starting to worry. And now I’m starting to worry…
