Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. S1 Ep14 - T.A.H.I.T.I.

After a month-long hiatus, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. is back with “T.A.H.I.T.I.” Bill Paxton (Hatfields & McCoys) guest stars in the role of  S.H.I.E.L.D. Agent John Garrett, as Agent Coulson and his team set out to find a way to save Skye’s life. Even more secrets are revealed, leaving viewers scratching their heads and asking “What is T.A.H.I.T.I.?”

The team inquires about Skye’s condition

The episode picks up right where “TR.A.C.K.S.” left off. Skye is hanging on for dear life after Ian Quinn (David Conrad) shot her twice in the stomach. It seems all hope is lost until Coulson proclaims that if he can literally be brought back from the dead by S.H.I.E.L.D., then Skye can also be saved. At first I thought this was an odd choice by Coulson, given the fact that he has resentment towards S.H.I.E.L.D. for what they did to him. Putting him through such pain and torment causing him to lose the will to live. My mind was changed later when Fitz reassures us that Coulson was a different case than Skye, as Skye is still alive and Coulson was in fact dead after the events in New York.

By Coulson’s order the team hops on their plane and heads for the facility where Coulson was resurrected, with Quinn locked up in their interrogation room. This is where S.H.I.E.L.D. Agent John Garrett (Bill Paxton) comes in. S.H.I.E.L.D. orders Garrett to board the team’s aircraft in an attempt to retrieve Quinn. For obvious revenge-related reasons Coulson wants to keep him on board. Garrett, understanding the situation, agrees and joins Coulson and his team in their mission to save Skye and further interrogate Quinn. During Quinn’s interrogation we find out that The Clairvoyant, who we still have not seen, ordered him to shoot Skye. It turns out The Clairvoyant can see everything except for how Coulson was resurrected. So, he/she ordered Quinn to kill Skye hoping Skye would also be resurrected, much like Coulson, and then he/she would finally see how.

With the help of Fitz and Simmons, we find out that there are even more secrets behind what S.H.I.E.L.D. did to revive Coulson. This leads them to a military base code named “The Guest House” and searching for a miracle drug dubbed GH-325.

While at The Guest House, Coulson, Garrett, Fitz, and Ward face the heavy resistance of two armed soldiers guarding the facility. This led to a exciting gun shootout between the two factions. Coulson’s team ultimately wins but not before a self-destruct sequence in the base has been activated, leaving them very little time to find the GH-325.

Fortunately, Fitz finds the drug in time and is able to get it back to the plane to save Skye. Before this Coulson does some exploring around the base, finding the operating room he was revived in and finding out where GH-325 actually comes from. We find out GH-325, the drug that saves Skye’s life, is being extracted from a dead blue alien-like torso codenamed T.A.H.I.T.I. Unfortunately, all evidence to this is lost as the self destruct sequence commences and Coulson escapes with the knowledge that S.H.I.E.L.D. may be up to something very wrong and immoral.

Overall, “T.A.H.I.T.I.” was a solid episode. Bill Paxton’s guest appearance as John Garrett was refreshing and I enjoyed seeing him team up with the rest of the crew. John Garrett is tough, gritty, and in control, but also friendly and good-natured when needed to be. Its a good thing we’ll be seeing Garrett pop up in a few more episodes. This episode was definitely light on the humor, as it should be since Skye is comatose and wounded for its entirety. I appreciated that the characters all had equal time to shine in this episode. Fitz and Simmons deconstructed the secrets behind Coulson’s resurrection. Ward was able to show off his soldier-like capabilities. May got to beat down a defenseless Ian Quinn as payback for shooting Skye. It was all very enjoyable to watch.

Coulson’s revelation about T.A.H.I.T.I. was just plain weird and leaves us with even more questions. What was that blue alien? What is GH-325? Will GH-325 affect Skye in anyway other than reviving her? These are great questions that we definitely need to see answered.

The final stinger scene saw the arrival of the Marvel Comics character Lorelei, an Asgardian set out to control all mankind in Midgard (Earth). In next week’s episode we’ll get to see Jaimie Alexander guest star as Lady Sif from Marvel’s Thor films as she assists Coulson and his team in taking Lorelei down.
