According to The Hollywood Reporter, Matt Ryan (Criminal Minds, Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag) will play John Constantine in NBC’s upcoming TV series based on the popular DC Comics character. Constantine is still in the early stages of production as David S. Goyer (Man of Steel) is set to Executive Produce, Daniel Cerone (Dexter) is set to write, and Neil Marshall (Game of Thrones) is set to direct the pilot.

John Constantine, a cynical British anti-hero first introduced in Alan Moore’s The Saga of the Swamp Thing, made a name for himself in the comic book series Hellblazer, published under DC’s Vertigo imprint. In 2011 the character underwent a serious revamp and was reintroduced in DC’s New 52 line of comics in the title Justice League Dark. Soon after, Vertigo’s Hellblazer series concluded with issue #300 making it Vertigo’s longest running title. Now the character can be found in the pages of Justice League Dark and his own series, Constantine.

NBC’s Constantine will most likely be in line with Vertigo’s Hellblazer continuity rather than The New 52 continuity, but it’s still uncertain. Recently director Guillermo del Toro (Hellboy, Pacific Rim) displayed interest in creating a Justice League Dark inspired film. Whether NBC’s series will overlap with Del Toro’s project or if said project will even be green-lit has not been confirmed.

So, what do you think of Matt Ryan being cast as John Constantine? Is he a better choice than Keanu Reeves? Let us know in the comments.
