Even canon isn’t safe these days. An upcoming interview with J.K. Rowling for Wonderland magazine, with Emma Watson as guest interviewer, has been teased online with a fun little fact that has shippers back out on the battlefields. According to this interview, Rowling apparently regrets putting Hermione with Ron:
I wrote the Hermione/Ron relationship as a form of wish fulfillment. That’s how it was conceived, really. For reasons that have very little to do with literature and far more to do with me clinging to the plot as I first imagined it, Hermione ended up with Ron. I know, I’m sorry. I can hear the rage and fury it might cause some fans, but if I’m absolutely honest, distance has given me perspective on that. It was a choice I made for very personal reasons, not for reasons of credibility. Am I breaking people’s hearts by saying this? I hope not.
Rowling also said that Ron and Hermione probably would have required marriage counseling, and she and Emma agreed that Harry would have been a better match. The full interview will be available on Friday, so there may be more details revealed that make this sound not quite as heart-breaking for Ron–and the fans–as it does now.
So what do you think? Do you agree with Rowling? Which pairing do you ship? Sound off in the comments!
I don’t ship any of the three with each other but I think Hermione/Harry does make more sense chemistry-wise.
By the end, the Ron/Hermione thing seemed a bit too forced to me but it doesn’t bother me too much. The romance doesn’t necessarily hurt the books (or movies).
I was never attached to Ron/Hermione, but I was very attached to Harry/Ginny, and still think that one made the most sense. Though in the films, Harry/Hermione is way better. But that’s just because Dan and Emma really do have better chemistry, and Ginny is all but absent, so the Harry/Ginny relationship doesn’t make a lot of sense.
I heard all this late. My friend told me she was also upset! Ron and Hermione kept the movie interesting! Rupert and Emma had chemistry, the crowd applauded when they finally kissed. They were a beautiful couple. I will try to erase this from my mind.
