Bill Paxton, who recently starred on History Channel’s Hatfields & McCoys, will guest star on at least four episodes of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. beginning in February. He will be playing S.H.I.E.L.D. Agent John Garrett.

Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. co-showrunner Jed Whedon told TV Guide Garrett will be portrayed as “a rough-and-tumble former cohort of Agent Coulson with a little bit of attitude and cigar-smoking swagger.” Also, according to co-showrunner Maurissa Tancharoen, Garrett’s character will come “into the fold in a very surprising way” and “is the type who wants to stay out in the field no matter how high-level he gets.” In addition, Whedon added:

When Garrett got his promotion to Level 7, he refused to sit behind a desk and doesn’t like the formalities of S.H.I.E.L.D. He’s going to help Coulson solve some mysteries and is not afraid to rig an explosive or two.

The character of John Garrett was first introduced in Marvel Comics’ 1986 series Elektra: Assassin and has since become a cyborg. Whether Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. will go that far with the character is uncertain. Either way, bringing a high-caliber actor like Bill Paxton to the series is a smart move by ABC. Hopefully, he will bring an elevated level of gravitas rarely seen on the show.
