The US rolled out new cover art for the Harry Potter series this year in honor of its 15th anniversary, but the UK publishers aren’t to be outdone. Bloomsbury has commissioned full-color editions of the series for the first time.
Artist Jim Kay will be handling the new illustrations, with his first piece, a portrait of Harry, recently unveiled:
The new books, complete with new covers, will start arriving with the first book, Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, in September 2015. Kay is proud to be able to work on the series, commenting on his new job:
From my point of view it is, without doubt, the commission of a lifetime.
To design the characters, the clothing, the architecture and landscapes to possibly the most expansive fantasy world in children’s literature, well let’s just say I’m extremely excited about it.
However, I am also mindful of the huge responsibility this represents. I want to make sure I do the best job I possibly can.
So UK fans, look for those new editions in 2015! What do you think about the new artwork? Which books do you most want to see illustrated? Let us know in the comments below!
