To celebrate the 50th anniversary of Doctor Who, famous authors have been contributing to a special anniversary book, writing short stories released separately as ebooks before finally being released at the end of the year in one volume. 11 authors for 11 Doctors, one released each month over the course of this past year. And the final story, due to be released November 21, is written by Neil Gaiman.
The story, “Nothing O’Clock,” is based on the Eleventh Doctor. Here’s the synopsis:
Thousands of years ago, Time Lords built a Prison for the Kin. They made it utterly impregnable and unreachable. As long as Time Lords existed, the Kin would be trapped forever and the universe would be safe. They had planned for everything… everything, that is, other than the Time War and the fall of Gallifrey. Now the Kin are free again and there’s only one Time Lord left in the universe who can stop them!
Gaiman says that he’d love to see the story on screen, and that he wants to write for the Twelfth Doctor (Peter Capaldi), but it doesn’t look like he’ll be writing another episode for a while. His exact words:
Even though I managed to find time where there was no time at all to write this story, I haven’t been able to find time to write an actual Doctor Who episode. So I think that may have to wait a series or two.
As disappointing as that is, at least we have this story to tide us over until more Gaiman-style Who can grace our screens again.
