Hobbit Live Fan Event Wrap-up

On Monday, there was a live fan event for the upcoming The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug. Actors from the film and director Peter Jackson were in theaters around the world, connected via satellite, to answer questions from fans in the theaters and from twitter. The event was streamed live and included special sneak peeks at what’s to come in the next installment of the Hobbit trilogy.

The biggest news of the day was a new trailer for the film. Check it out:

Peter Jackson also showed a new video blog on their last pick-up shoots, which he described as ten weeks of “intense” filming. And Martin Freeman sent along a short video message to say thank you to the fans. But most of the event was taken up with a Q&A.

Some of the highlights from the Q&A include:

  • Will there ever be a blooper reel for The Lord of the Rings released on DVD/Blu-ray? Possibly. Peter Jackson wants there to be a blooper reel someday and he doesn’t know why one wasn’t included in the first place, but he did warn that the bloopers are on old VHS tapes, so the quality might not be so great. No one in the theater seemed to mind.
  • Evangeline Lilly wanted to avoid copying Liv Tyler’s and Cate Blanchett’s performances when creating her character Tauriel, so she based it instead on Tinkerbell.
  • Lee Pace, on the other hand, didn’t mind basing his moves on the elves that came before, claiming that he copied everything that Orlando Bloom had done as Legolas when Pace was playing Legolas’s father, Thranduil.
  • Orlando Bloom can still fit in his old Legolas costume.

The complete fan event can be found here. It’s only about an hour, and despite a few technical snags here and there, it looks like everyone had a lot of fun, though I think most fans will feel that it didn’t last long enough.

The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug will open in theaters December 13. Did you watch the event? What do you think of the new trailer? What would you have asked if you’d had the chance? Let us know in the comments below!
