Ever since it was announced that J.J. Abrams would direct the new Star Wars films, fans have been wondering how involved he would be in future Star Trek installments. Many people have assumed that he would not be directing, with that assumption being taken as fact for some time, and now it looks like we have official confirmation. In an interview with Collider, he said about his decision:
It’s a little bittersweet. Whomever it is that directs the film will be someone we all know is going to keep the cast and crew in good hands. I feel very lucky to have been part of it, and it definitely feels like the right time to let someone come in and do their own thing. I certainly don’t want someone to come in and try to do what I would have done. We want to hire someone who’s gonna come in and bring their own sensibility. I’m very excited to see what comes next, despite feeling jealous of whomever that person is.
Even though he won’t be returning to the director’s chair, Abrams will stay on as producer. Considering that a month ago, fans at a Trek convention voted Into Darkness the worst film in the franchise, perhaps a bit of new blood will do the films good.
What do you think? Will you miss JJ? Or are you looking forward to a new director? Sound off in the comments!
It’d be great if they got new writers, too.
