Gatiss’ role in ‘Game of Thrones’ revealed

Mark GatissIt was announced back in July that Mark Gatiss (Sherlock) would be joining the cast of Game of Thrones for its fourth season, but HBO have kept mum on just whom he would be playing. Speculation has been rife, but I’m not sure anyone saw this one coming.

Minor book spoilers ahead!

Gatiss will take on the role of Tycho Nestoris, a representative of the Iron Bank of Braavos, known in the world of the A Song of Ice And Fire (ASOIAF) books as someone who are particularly good at getting back the money owed to them. Even going so far as funding the enemies of their debtors in order to get a return on their loans, one way or another. In series 3 of Game of Thrones, Tyrion Lannister (Peter Dinklage) mentions the group as a possible threat as the throne is greatly in debt to them.

The reason the casting is such a surprise, is that the character of Nestoris is not actually introduced into the ASOIAF series until the 5th book, and the show is still only halfway through the 3rd. But those in the know (I’ll admit, I’m still only halfway through book 2) say the casting is perfect, and so we can’t wait to see what Gatiss does with the role.

Season 4 of Game of Thrones is currently filming, and it’s due to air on HBO in late March 2014.
