HBO Commissions ‘Westworld’ from Bad Robot

WestworldHBO have just made their biggest scripted television commitment yet, for a remake of a 70s Science Fiction western. Westworld will be based on the film of the same name written by Science Fiction author Michael Crichton (Jurassic Park), and is to be produced by Bad Robot (J.J. Abrams production company – Abrams will executive produce) with the pilot to be directed by Jonathan Nolan.

The story centers on an amusement park in the not so distant future, where attendees can relive any fantasy with the android of their choice (so for a more recent reference, sorta like Joss Whedon’s Dollhouse, only without exploiting humans). Westworld is the section of the park where a guest can relive their Wild West fantasies of facing a gunslinger at high noon for a duel.

As the series has only just been finalized, casting details and premiere dates are a ways off. But it’s likely to be late next year at the earliest.
