Glee Downgrades Season Regulars in Preparation for Season 5

Kicking a few grads out of the Glee nest – the show announces some series regular downgrades.

Exclusive from TVLine today: Glee has downgraded several original cast members from series regulars. Mark Salling (Puck), Amber Riley (Mercedes), Harry Shum, Jr. (Mike), and Dianna Agron (Quinn) —  all graduated at the end of season 3 — were kept around for occasional guest stints in season 4, so this isn’t exactly a surprise move. The announcement just confirms they’ll continue to be used in the same manner (or even less) in the upcoming season 5.  The inclusion of Heather Morris (Brittany) in the downgrades was expected, as Morris left the show at the end of the year  — her character got into MIT on early admission — after announcing she was pregnant in real life. She may also show up as a guest star, though her storyline was rather conclusively wrapped up in the season finale. We’ll see if the Powers That Be decide to shake things up for Sam or Santana at some point down the road.

With the school year extending from season 4 into season 5, we’ll assume there won’t be a host of new characters introduced, aside from populating the inevitable “Funny Girl” storyline and filling in that last necessary member of New Directions when Nationals rolls around. The announcement about season 3 regulars points to a slimmed down Glee, with the focus on the lingering unresolved storylines in both Ohio and New York City.

Glee returns with Season 5 on Thursday, Sept. 19.
