Looks like that news about Sony scheduling two new Spidey films (that’d be 3 & 4, yes, they’re apparently confident) has already had it’s first true impact. While talking to Entertainment Weekly about her upcoming film Divergent, Shailene Woodley told the magazine that her role as Mary Jane Watson has been cut from 2014’s The Amazing Spider-Man 2.

According to Woodley’s comments, it looks like the move isn’t due to a poor performance on her part (or fan upcry that she wasn’t “pretty” enough to be the model, drop dead gorgeous Mary Jane – as described in the comics), but due to plans for those two newly announced films. She told the magazine, “Of course I’m bummed. But I am a firm believer in everything happening for a specific reason… Based on the proposed plot, I completely understand the need for holding off on introducing [Mary Jane] until the next film.”

Mary Jane was never meant to be a very big role in the film, as evidenced by director Mark Webb’s comments after news slipped that Woodley had been cast. Gwen Stacey is still very much the love interest for Spidey this go around (though comics fans are waiting for her inevitable demise), and there’s still Felicy Jones possible appearance as The Black Cat, though her role has yet to be confirmed in the film.
