Sony announces two more Spidey films, already

The Amazing Spider-ManYep, the sequel to last years The Amazing Spider-Man is still a year away from hitting our screens, but apparently Sony are confident enough that they’re announcing two more films. So not only will we see Spidey on 2nd May, 2014 (while the Brits get it a over two weeks earlier, 14th April), but he’ll be back on 10th June 2016, and 4th May, 2018. Assuming they have him contracted, it looks like Andrew Garfield is going to be busy for a while.

It’s surprising that the films are being greenlit so far in advance, considering The Amazing Spider-Man did well, but not as well as hoped. “Spider-Man is our most important, most successful, and most beloved franchise, so we’re thrilled that we are in a position to lock in these prime release dates over the next five years,” said Jeff Blake, in charge of marketing for Sony. Of course, considering so much seems to rest on locking down dates before the competition can, it’s likely that’s at least part of the strategy here. Considering how Superhero heavy the years are getting these days, one can’t really blame them.

So what do you think, is Sony shooting its web (okay, I’m a little ashamed of that one, though not enough to erase it) too soon?
