New Poster and Trailer for The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug

Remember how The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey left us with just a tiny glimpse of Smaug the dragon at the very end? Well, despite the name of the sequel, we get sort of the same brief look with the brand new trailer and poster. The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug will be out later this year. We have a new poster, which you can take a look at below, that only gives us a tiny hint that there’s even a dragon in the movie, by way of what we can assume to be fire coming out of its lair (though that bit of gold could also be, you know, gold, so maybe there’s no dragon at all on this poster):

Next, we’ve got a new full-length trailer, which starts off with a mysterious and ominous sounding British voiceover, as is required these days. We see a lot of elves, especially Legolas, who even though he did technically live in Mirkwood at the time, did not actually appear in the book. We also get to see Tauriel, a brand new character, flying through the air while shooting arrows, so she seems pretty cool.  At the end we finally get a glimpse of Smaug, played by the versatile Benedict Cumberbatch, who not only did the voice but also the movements, just like Andy Serkis did for Gollum. It looks just like how a trailer should look, with plenty of action, adventure, and suspense, but it does make you wonder exactly how the heck they’re going to stretch the rest of the book into another film after this. Where is this installment going to end, and how will the third one be anything more than like five minutes long? Here, watch the trailer yourself:

The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug will be released December 13. So what do you think about the new trailer? Excited? Impressed by Thranduil’s eyebrows? Let us know in the comments below!
