Matt Smith Leaving Doctor Who

Matt Smith Leaving Doctor Who

The news we’ve been dreading has finally arrived: on Saturday the BBC announced that Matt Smith will be leaving Doctor Who at the end of the year.  Now that season 7’s finally wrapped up, that means the only adventures with 11 that we’ve got left are the 50th anniversary special and the Christmas Special, which will revolve around his departure.

Smith had this to say to the BBC about his time as 11:

“Doctor Who has been the most brilliant experience for me as an actor and a bloke, and that largely is down to the cast, crew and fans of the show. I’m incredibly grateful to all the cast and crew who work tirelessly every day, to realise all the elements of the show and deliver Doctor Who to the audience. Many of them have become good friends and I’m incredibly proud of what we have achieved over the last four years.”

Ah, memories: one of the first glimpses we had of Smith’s 11th Doctor.

Steven Moffat and current companion Jenna Louise Coleman have also spoken out about how great Smith has been.  Moffat also had this tantalizing quote to add:

“Of course, this isn’t the end of the story, because now the search begins. Somewhere out there right now – all unknowing, just going about their business – is someone who’s about to become the Doctor. A life is going to change, and Doctor Who will be born all over again! After 50 years, that’s still so exciting!”

Although the unlimited possibilities for a new Doctor are exciting, it still seems too soon to let go of Smith.  We might have half a year left before his departure, but that’s only two episodes.  The BBC has promised video from Smith about his announcement, so keep your eyes peeled here; we’ll post that as soon as we get it.

In the meantime, it’s time for a bit of mourning, and to share our favorite 11 moments.  We can also speculate: how do we think 11’s story will end?  Does this mean a return to Trenzalore?  What about Coleman’s character Clara: will she carry on with another Doctor like many companions in the past, or will her story wrap up as well?  And most enticing of all: what would we like to see from the new Doctor?  Carry on with these and any of your thoughts in the comments below!
