Images from New Miyazaki Film The Wind Rises

Many Studio Ghibli fans haven’t even gotten to see From Up on Poppy Hill yet, but already we’re starting to get information on another new project.  This one comes directly from famed animator and Ghibli co-founder Hayao Miyazaki himself.  It’s called The Wind Rises, and it’s all about one of Miyazaki’s familiar obsessions: aviation.  In this case it’s an adaptation of a manga about Jiro Horikoshi, who designed the Mitsubishi A6M Zero fighter plane.  The plane was a popular model during World War II, so that gives us further idea of around when the story will be set.

It’ll be interesting to see Miyazaki’s take on the story, especially as he adapted the screenplay as well as directed; he clearly has a fascination with planes, as aviation imagery pops up in nearly all of his films.  Some, like Porco Rosso, are even based around it.  But his films also often have pacifistic messages, so that might be from where the film will derive its tension.  You can view some images from the film in the gallery below.

The Wind Rises opens in Japan on July 20.  There’s no word on when it’ll make it to the States, but given Disney’s consistent distribution deal with Studio Ghibli, I’m sure it’ll make it over here.

In the meantime, Ghibli fans can tide themselves over with From Up on Poppy Hill.  Directed by Miyazaki’s son Goro (and co-written by Hayao), the movie came out in theaters in March.  For those of us who couldn’t find a theater playing it, the film is available for preorder and will be released on Blu-Ray/DVD on September 3.  You can check out the trailer below.

Excited for either of these films?  Uncertain about Goro’s newest undertaking after the abysmal Tales from Earthsea?  Want more fantasy back in your Ghibli?  Let us know in the comments below!
