The cast of X-Men: Days of Future Past just keeps growing, but the latest addition creates an interesting problem for Marvel. Evan Peters has been cast as the mutant Quicksilver, one of Magneto’s children and the twin brother of the Scarlet Witch. The problem comes from the fact that Joss Whedon has already confirmed the inclusion of Quicksilver and his sister, the Scarlet Witch, in Avengers 2.
Why is this such a big deal? Here’s a quick explanation of the situation: Different studios hold the rights to different Marvel characters. X-Men is the cinematic property of 20th Century Fox, while the characters included in the films that led up to The Avengers are owned by Disney (and Spiderman is owned by Sony, which is why he probably won’t be popping up in the Avengers-verse despite being a member). However, in the comics, these characters often crossover from one series to another, so things get complicated when the characters are split up like this. In fact, it has been reported that Avengers 2 wouldn’t be able to use the superhero names of Quicksilver and the Scarlet Witch. Instead, only their real names, Pietro and Wanda, can be used because Fox owns the rights to their code names. So how are things going to turn out with two different studios trying to use the same character? Will this affect Whedon’s plans? Will Peters make an epic crossover to the Avengers-verse or will they cast another actor for that version of Quicksilver? We’ll keep you updated as they try to figure that out.
X-Men: Days of Future Past will be released July 18, 2014. What do you think about the situation? Would you like to see a X-Men/Avengers crossover with Peters playing the same character in both movies, or do you think that the studios will never go for the idea? Let us know in the comments below!
This just keeps getting more and more fascinating. When I read that Joss confirmed the presence of Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver, I assumed that meant they’d already worked out the rights issues with Fox. Studios are getting jumpier about announcing things until the legal stuff is all sorted (especially after that early mess with the Hobbit). Rumors leak, but stuff doesn’t tend to get officially announced until after that’s all sorted out.
It seems like the agreement you mentioned, where Fox gets Quicksilver/Scarlet Witch, and Marvel gets Pietro and Wanda, is how they worked it out As cool as it would be to have the same actor play the character, and as much as I would like that, I really think that the studios wouldn’t let that much of an overlap happen. I remember reading something once from Jaimie Alexander where she said she’d love to play Wonder Woman, or someone else in the DC universe, but because she’s Sif she doesn’t think she’d ever be allowed, because the studios don’t like to share.
I have to admit, I’m getting more and more wary of this film. Trying to include too many characters is part of how the first trilogy fell apart in the end, and Singer just keeps adding more and more to DOFP. I really liked FC, and so was looking forward to the sequel. Now I’m expecting it to be as much of a mess as X3.
I’m feeling the same way. Unless some of these people are just going to be background characters, then I have no idea how they’re going to be able to devote enough time to develop any of these characters properly along with a plot.
