Orphan Black S1 Ep5 – Conditions of Existence

Wow. Okay. I thought I had some things figured out, but now it seems I have no idea what is going on. We are now halfway through the season and I feel I am no closer to knowing what is going on than when we first started.

Orphan Black S1 Ep 5 Dream

I was originally expecting this episode to be more action orientated to start picking up the pace for the reveal, but it would seem the writers and directors enjoy toying with us as much as they enjoy toying with Sarah. This episode slows things down to allow for more twists and to reintroduce characters in new lights.

We start with Helena, the killer Russian clone, getting patched up by the mystery man from the ending of the last episode. Then it cuts to Sarah having a strange dream of doctors doing weird doctor-y stuff to her. Turns out, nope, not a dream at all. There really were doctors doing weird doctor-y stuff to her in her sleep, because she wakes up to discover like all good doctors they left medical equipment inside her and screwed up her veins taking blood samples. If this has happened to you, you might be or have a clone.

The unsettling part of discovering night-visiting doctors have done things to your sleeping person is that the person sleeping next to you is probably in on it. So if this has happened to you, heads up: the person sleeping with you is probably not who you think.

Orphan Black S1 Ep5 Olivier

After checking Beth’s apartment for surveillance equipment, they find a box of things Paul has kept from Beth. Using the found equipment, thank you Raj, they decide to investigate where Paul works and bug it.

While this is going on, Allison begins to suspect her husband is a spy. So far the only thing she can discover is his porn collection and a box she can’t open, and when she does it’s filled with the same porn. Allison’s hubby, Donnie, might look bumbling, but he’s revealed to be a little more cunning than he lets on by the end of the show.

Later Allison is out getting her own surveillance equipment to spy on Donnie when she has a run in with Vic. Vic, by this time, is no longer the dimwitted drug dealer, but a desperate thug trying to save his own life. Remember in the beginning when Sarah stole the brick of cocaine intent on selling to fund starting her life over? Yeah, well, that was Vic’s, and the guy he was supposed to sell it for doesn’t care if Sarah is dead, he still wants his money. As incentive he cuts off Vic’s finger with a paper cutter. Yikes!

Vic catches up with the real Sarah, and after getting the money he owes, he threatens that “this isn’t over.” And Sarah can’t catch a break, because Paul is on to her and demands to see her, sending her a picture of Sarah and Kira together from earlier that day. It’s revealed that Paul is a monitor working for a man called Olivier, but even he doesn’t know exactly what is going on. He’s just doing a job, and now he’s conflicted because he’s developed feelings for Sarah as Beth, and he learns that Beth is dead.

Also, Cosima might be a lesbian.

Orphan Black S1 Ep 5 Paul

Like I said, by the end of this I no longer had a clue as to what was going on, but it doesn’t mean I’m confused or feel stupid. Which I am glad the show doesn’t do to the viewer. They really respect the audience and they seem pretty confident that we’re keeping up with the information.  It would be terrible if at every commercial break they were re-explaining everything. They give us just enough information to further the conspiracy, but not enough that they show all their cards. They are keeping the mystery mysterious, and that is refreshing.

And it might be because of this ability to balance all these spinning plates that Orphan Black has been renewed for a second season of another ten episodes! So don’t expect the conspiracy to end all nice and neat with the last episode. We might get closer to knowing the truth, but I doubt we’ll get the whole truth and nothing but the truth. So help me God.
