New Man of Steel Trailer Released

Warner Brothers has just put out a new trailer for its upcoming Superman flick, Man of Steel.   The trailers we’ve gotten up until this point have more or less been teasers, but this one, clocking in at 3 minutes, practically summarizes the whole film.  But that’s a good thing.  Prior trailers have made us uncertain what the film was going to be about — is this another origin story?  More contemplative Clark a la Superman Returns?  Distracting cameos from Russell Crowe and Kevin Costner?  Zod’s in there somewhere?  None of that was clear, and now it is.  Check out the trailer below:

I gotta say, this looks really good.  I’ve been skeptical about Man of Steel, from when I first heard it would be another origin story (is there really anyone out there who doesn’t know Superman’s back story?), to when I saw the first teaser before The Dark Knight Rises, set to the mournful ending bits of the “Bridge of Khazad Dum” score from The Fellowship of the Ring.  “By nightfall these hills will be swarming with orcs!” my brain supplied.  “This looks like Deadliest Catch: Middle Earth Edition,” the Internet quipped.

But the above trailer looks like it’s taking all the disparate parts we’d heard about the film before — Krypton back story, growing up on a farm in Kansas, bearded brooding recluse scenes (which appear to be producer Christopher Nolan’s new wheelhouse), the Fortress of Solitude, Superman’s in cuffs, Zod — and piecing it into a cohesive narrative. A long cohesive narrative (the film clocks in at about 2 1/2 hours), but we’re used to that from superhero movies at this point.  Also, the cinematography is gorgeous.  Superman might not be my favorite superhero, and I’m not chewing my nails in anticipation the way I was for Avengers last year, but now for the first time I actually want to see the movie.

Man of Steel is out in theaters in the U.S. and U.K. on June 14.

Are you as impressed by the new trailer as I am?  Still unconvinced?  Let us know your thoughts in the comments below.
