The next step in Marvel’s Phase Two is underway now that production on Captain America: The Winter Soldier has begun. The first behind-the-scenes photo has been released, which you can see on the right, but along with that a few new details about the characters and plot have been revealed as well.

The film has been described as a 70’s political thriller, with an official description of:

Steve Rogers struggles to embrace his role in the modern world and teams up with Natasha Romanoff, a.k.a. Black Widow, to battle a powerful yet shadowy enemy in present-day Washington, D.C.

That’s right, the Black Widow will have a big part in the film. So will the rest of S.H.I.E.L.D, including Maria Hill, Nick Fury, and Robert Redford’s character, who has just been revealed to be Alexander Pierce, a former agent who gets pulled back in to run the organization.

In addition, expect flashbacks to Steve’s old life, which will probably be where Hayley Atwell’s cameo as Peggy Carter will take place, unless we also get some present day Peggy scenes as well. And Cap will be getting a new love interest in Agent 13, aka Sharon Carter, played by Emily VanCamp. For those unfamiliar with the comics, yes, Sharon is related to Peggy, though the exact relation has changed over time in the comics so we don’t know just yet what it’ll be in the film. Great-niece, maybe?

Captain America: The Winter Soldier will be released April 4, 2014. Excited yet? Desperately yearning to be frozen like a Capsicle just so that when you wake up decades in the future all the Phase Two films will be out already? Let us know in the comments below!
