David Bradely To Play The First Doctor

For the 50th anniversary of Doctor Who, the BBC is filming a docudrama on the origins of the show entitled An Adventure in Space and Time. Some of you may have known that, but now the BBC has let it be known who will be playing the First Doctor by way of William Hartnell, none other than David Bradely. You may know him as Argus Filch from the Harry Potter films, and if you were a keen eyed viewer this year you spotted him in the Doctor Who episode “Dinosaurs on a Spaceship” as the space pirate Solomon. Now he won’t actually be playing The Doctor proper, but rather he will be portraying actor William Hartnell as the First Doctor. It’s a bit meta.

Also appearing in the 50th anniversary docudrama will be Jessica Raine, playing producer Variety Lambert. Interestingly enough she will also appear in the Neil Cross-penned Doctor Who episode “Phantom of the Hex” for the March 30th return of season 7.

Now, I propose to you this: why limit Bradely’s role of The Doctor to the dramatization of the show’s creation, when you could shoehorn him into the 50th anniversary episode special? I mean, we let Richard Hurdnall have a go at the role for the show’s 20th anniversary special “The Five Doctors,” and no one was really upset by that. Just saying.
