No surprise, but The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey topped the charts this weekend at the box office, and it broke a record along the way. It grossed $84.8 million and it set the record for the biggest opening for a December release, breaking the previous record set by I Am Legend in 2007 with $77.2 million. The Hobbit made $37.5 million on its first day alone thanks to people like yours truly who waited in lines for midnight showings. It also surpassed the opening weekend total made by the last Lord of the Rings movie, Return of the King, which made $73.3 million back in 2003. Can it match the total earnings of its predecessors? That remains to be seen.
