Chevy Chase will part ways with NBC’s Community, TVLine confirms. The decision is effective immediately and is said to have been a mutual decision. As a result, Chase will not appear in the final one or two episodes of Community‘s fourth season, filming now.
The split marks the end of a series of conflicts between Chase and Community. Last spring, Chase was at the center of a disagreement that resulted in Community creator Dan Harmon being fired. In October, production halted after Chase used a racial slur on set. Chase once referred to his decision to join the show as “a big mistake”.
Will you miss Chase’s presence on the show, or has this decision been a long time coming? Tell us in the comments!
Oh girl, say what?
I will say that I liked Chevy’s character in the first season or so of Community, but I will agree that the writers did keep him in a non-growing racist old man role.
Don’t get me wrong, I do very much enjoy Community, but it hit it’s stride late in season 2 and pretty much kept to a formula based on archetypes and tropes from there. Sometimes it would get meta and hint that they knew they were on a TV show and that nothing was settled until Jole McHale gave a rousing group encouraging monologue at the end of each episode.
The show also ventured a bit more into a “Troy & Abed Show featuring Anne” in it’s last two seasons where character’s like Chevy’s and Yvette Nicole Brown’s were put in the back ground, along with Ken Jeong.
With Dan being gone, the season getting hiatus’d and characters leaving I don’t see this show lasting much longer.
Which is sad, because I really really liked it.
I can’t say I’m surprised. There’s been friction with him on set for a while, and now that it looks like the show is wrapping up, it’s not surprising that he’s leaving. Part of me wishes he could have tried to stick around for the final episodes, for continuity’s sake, but at the same time it sounds like he really wasn’t happy to be there, so it’s for the best that he doesn’t stay in a situation that likely makes everyone unhappy.
I’m really sad about Community ending, but it’s been coming in dribs and drabs for a while, so no one piece of news is really that devastating to me. Especially because I agree that Pierce hasn’t really had much character growth in a while.
