Just three weeks ago it was revealed that Joss Whedon would be returning to the Marvel Universe, taking on the job of writing and directing the sequel to his wildly successful Avengers film. Within the news were hints that Whedon might also be returning to his TV roots with a program also to be set in the Marvel Universe, but what that show would be and his role within it was unclear.
Well, now we know.
ABC has just commissioned a pilot for S.H.I.E.L.D., a series based on the peacekeeping organization within the Marvel Universe better known by it’s acronym, as the Strategic Hazard Intervention Espionage Logistics Directorate is a bit of a mouthful.
S.H.I.E.L.D. will be written by Whedon and his frequent collaborators, brother Jed Whedon, and sister-in-law, Maurissa Tancharoen who previously worked with Whedon on fan favorites Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog and Dollhouse. Whedon is also set to direct the pilot for the film, assuming his schedule allows for it.
My fingers are firmly crossed, and greatly look forward to Whedon’s return to TV. Let us know how you feel in the comments below!

Exciting!
Wheee! This is awesome. It’s a great way to develop SHIELD more, because to be honest in the movies we want all superheroes all the time. But we also want more SHIELD. Now we get it all. I’d be much more suspicious but if the Whedon team is on it, I’m definitely way more optimistic than skeptical.
I’ll admit, I’m happiest because it means more Joss on TV. I love everything he does, but I love his TV the best. And even though this won’t be him creating his own characters, it’s still quite exciting.
